Bad eyesight can be a nuisance, especially if it interrupts daily activities and puts a dent in your wallet from doctor’s appointments and different treatments. Although sometimes it just cannot be helped and needs to be treated by eye doctor, there are ways to prevent bad eyesight or improve it through the foods that you eat.
Most individuals learned at a young age that carrots are one of the best vegetables to eat for maintaining healthy eyesight. This is true because carrots are high in beta-carotene which is turned into Vitamin A by the liver. Vitamin A is known to play a role in sustaining normal vision. But they should be eaten every day if you want to see effects—don’t just expect results from eating them once. Also, it is important to know that it’s a normal effect of aging for vision to decline over time, and sometimes no matter how healthy your diet is, your eyesight will still decrease.
Eggs are another food that will improve eyesight over time. They contain sulphur centered materials, which aid in preventing the development of cataracts. Eggs are easy to incorporate into the diet and contain other nutrients that are needed for proper health such as protein.
Carrots aren’t the only vegetables that maintain normal vision. Dark leafy green vegetables should be consumed on a daily basis as well. They provide the body with an antioxidant called lutein, which has been claimed to assist with reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration. This is the main cause of vision loss in elderly people so one should begin eating leafy greens regularly at an early age. Despite the antioxidants, they contain other essential nutrients as well.
Avocados are extremely healthy fruits that improve eye health. People tend to steer away from them because of their fat content, but the fats they contain are healthy fats. They contain a high amount of the antioxidant lutein, higher than any other fruit. Avocados also increase the absorbtion of cartenoids (which turn into Vitamin A) from other foods. Consuming even a small amount of them with carrots or spinach will provide optimum nutrition for your eyes.
Most fish contain nutrients that are important for the functioning of your eyes. The downfall is that many of them contain chemicals like mercury and aren’t always safe to eat. Salmon, on the other hand is safe and contains Vitamin A, D and omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients benefit the brain as well which is why salmon can be referred to as “brain food.”
Another antioxidant that is extremely helpful in improving and maintaining eyesight is called a flavanoid. Foods that contain flavanoids are dark chocolate, dark colored berries (blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, dark grapes, dark cherries, etc…), and red wine. Flavanoids protect blood vessels found in the eyes as well as the heart. These foods also possess Vitamin C which provides plenty of other benefits.
If you are already eating normal servings of these foods, be sure you are avoiding unhealthy food as well! Sugar, trans-fats, and refined flour can all contribute to vision loss. They are found in many foods today so it is easy to forget about them.
